When I learned I was pregnant with my third son, I was running out of fresh ideas for decorating a boy’s nursery. I had already done this twice! I was tired of decorating with light blue. So I branched out and made a completely new and unique nursery for my third son.

I used black, gray, and a bold green with some pops of bright, primary colors. I’m not a professional decorator, but I love how it turned out. The nursery is fun and cheery and says “boy” without the blue. It’s nice to enjoy a room when you spend so much time there in the wee hours of the night.
Here are a few of my favorite decorating ideas which can be used in any boy or girl nursery.
Wall Decals
I used triangle wall decals to create a feature wall. The whole process took about 45 minutes. Decals are far simpler to install (and much less permanent) than painting. When the baby gets older and wants a change, you can simply peel them off! Wall decals are affordable and come in a wide variety of shapes, colors, and designs.
Spray Paint for the Perfect Color
Are you picky about colors like me? Spray paint cheap items to get the exact color you want! While shopping for decorations for the baby’s room, my husband would kindly point out when he saw something green. But I wasn’t just looking for any green. I didn’t want lime green or forest green. I wanted a bold, emerald green! I found elephant figurines, cheap unfinished frames, and a cool geometric knick-knack at Hobby Lobby and spray painted them the exact color I wanted.
Use Your Children’s Toys
Go on a scavenger hunt around the house and look through your kiddos’ toys and books. Pick out anything that fits into your color scheme and see if you can incorporate it into the room instead of buying something new. One of the fun things about decorating children’s rooms is that you can use blocks, books, trains, stuffed animals, dolls, dinosaurs, and more to add some color and fun. The tiny dinosaurs on the green shelf below came in my boys’ Easter eggs last year.
Once in a while, my sons will pick a dinosaur or train that I have deemed “decoration” off a shelf and decide to play with it. This is not a major drawback for me because if they weren’t moving around the decorations in their room, they’d probably just be dumping out a whole container of Legos or moving all my Tupperware. Admittedly, using toys as decorations may not work with your son or daughter’s favorite toy.
I am not a decorating expert, but I love creating spaces that make me and my family feel happy and comfortable at home. Have fun decorating! It won’t stay perfect for long, but a mom can try.
